The Importance of Thanksgiving Flossing

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and we know that means many of our patients are getting ready for a delicious meal surrounded by loving friends and family. Thanksgiving is one of our favorite times of year as it’s a chance to reconnect with loved ones, relax with family and friends, and enjoy the magic of incredible food – but that Thanksgiving dinner has some hidden surprises! For this blog, we’re going to talk about the importance of flossing – particularly after a big Thanksgiving meal.

Giving Thanks – to Your Teeth

While we love a hearty slab of turkey and a generous glass of wine, our teeth don’t take nearly as kindly to comfort food as our taste buds. That’s because tiny food particles can collect in the cracks and crevices around teeth, and the sugar and carbohydrates in those particles interact with bacteria to form acids that eat away at tooth enamel. If left alone, this acid can corrode the surface of the teeth, causing tooth decay and cavities. Thankfully, preventing this decay is easy – all it takes is a solid routine of brushing and flossing.

We all know how important brushing is to dental health, but it’s not enough on its own – without flossing, more than 30% of your tooth surface remains unguarded from bacteria and acid. Flossing helps to dislodge pesky, stubborn food particles, disrupt bacterial growth between the teeth, and promote gum health by improving circulation – all critical factors in dental and oral health. So this Thanksgiving, give thanks to your teeth by flossing and taking good care of them!
